ILRI@40 Nairobi meeting with Ed Rege Date: 17 July 2014 Time: 1500-1600 hours Venue: Directorate meeting room

Present: Jimmy Smith, Ed Rege, Shirley Tarawali, Nadine Sanginga, Joyce Maru, Muthoni Njiru,Tezira Lore

Agenda: To update Ed on the plans for the ILRI@40 Nairobi event and hear his ideas on his proposed role as facilitator of the roundtable discussions

Summary of discussions

  • The roundtable discussions should feature questions that address the most critical livestock-related issues around health, nutrition, food security and economic well-being as well as longer term investments and areas of research.
  • Statements from ILRI's founding agencies should come before the keynote address.
  • Targeting a non-Kenyan keynote speaker is good as it gives the event a focus greater than Kenya; the event should not be a 'discussion about Kenya' so the disucssion will need to be carefully framed and nuanced to address ILRI's global mandate.
  • Ed will not play the role of MC, rather, will focus on driving in-depth discussions and linking key issues, leading to a 'hard talk' type of discussion that puts the panelists to task then scaling up the discussion to higher levels
  • In line with regional focus, invite ministers of agriculture from Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Could also invite the Sierra Leone agriculture minister to have representation from West Africa.
  • Could frame the discussions around the themes of livestock and the environment, food & nutrition, livestock and public health interface of interest. Principal secretaries, farmer groups can be asked to respond to specific issues in a few minutes to round up the panel discussions.
  • Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of NEPAD, proposed as possible keynote speaker (first choice) followed by Djime Adoum. Papa Seck could be part of a panel discussion (he is the immediate former DG of AfricaRice and current agriculture minister in Senegal).

Action points

  • Jimmy to contact Ibrahim Mayaki and Papa Seck to enquire if they are available.
  • Shirley to lead the process of refining the key issues to be discussed by the panels and who we can bring on board.
