ILRI@40 Nairobi Event: Meeting #9 Date: 24 July 2014 Venue: InfoCentre Time: 1000-1030

Present: Shirley, Jo, Robert, Tezira, Kate Apologies: Joyce, Ethel (attending RUFORUM conference)

Agenda Since most of the task force members were away, we didn't have a formal meeting but a brief update on where we currently are with regard to the preparations.

Summary of discussions Shirley gave an overview of the meeting held with Ed Rege and Jimmy last week Thursday ( see Wiki notes); the overview is summarized below:

  • The morning session will start with welcome remarks from Jimmy, the cabinet secretary for agriculture and 5-min statements from our founding agencies

Jimmy has called Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of NEPAD, to find out if he'd be available as the keynote speaker. Mayaki is interested but needs to confirm his availability and will get back to us by the end of this week. We're planning for one roundtable with 4-5 people. We identified * Papa Seck (agriculture minister, Senegal and former DG, AfricaRice) * Agnes Kalibata (agriculture minister, Rwanda) [Edit update 25July: Gerardine Mukeshimana, BecA-ILRI postdoc, has been appointed as Rwanda's new agric minister] * Someone to address the theme of 'livestock and environment' - possibly CEO GEF or Executive Secretary UNFCC or Achim Steiner/Mohamed Sessay from UNEP * Someone to address the theme of 'livestock and health/nutrition - possibly Luis Sambo (WHO regional director for Africa) or Bernard Vallat/Walter Masiga (OIE) * Someone to address 'livestock and gender equity' - possibly Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg (AWARD) Principal secretaries from state departments of health, livestock etc. will then have a few minutes to respond to the discussion on what they think are the key areas of investment in their respective ministries to raise the profile of livestock Jo and Tezira noted that three people contacted informally have already said they are willing to be panelists. In order to avoid too large a panel because the Kenya PSs will speak afterwards, we need to keep track of who has accepted to be a panelist and how many more slots we need to fill. So far we have: * Kipkirui Lang'at from New KCC - contacted by Jo * Langat Kipkoech from SNV - contacted by Jo * Fina Opio (ASARECA) - contacted by Ethel Shirley noted that in the event that Ibrahim Mayaki is not available as keynote speaker, the next step would be to approach Papa Seck to give the keynote then only one agriculture minister on the panel. Kate gave a quick update on the budget development; she is still waiting for some feedback from a few people on the cost estimates of their items and will then consolidate these into the main budget. Afternoon session - campus tours: Iain has emailed program leaders in Integrated Sciences to request them to identify scientists from their respective teams who will take the lead in showcasing their research (in liaison with Jo, Henry and Ethel) Shirley noted that an invite needs to be sent to the Chief of Protocol, Kenya [PS Foreign Affairs] – Nadine to organize [vide Shirley's email]

Next meeting: Thursday 31 July 2014
